II. The BREECH BABY Acupuncture and Moxibustion Treatment
The use of acupuncture and moxibustion (moxa) to turn breech babies has a long history in Traditional Chinese Medicine dating back to the 16th century.
By using specific acupuncture points and gently applying heat to the points with moxa (an herb called Mugwort), these treatments help stimulate the Yang energy in the mother. It is believed in TCM that the root of breech presentation can present in the mother when there is stagnation and Yang deficiency. Thus, this is why the Yang energy must be supported, and why most breech presentations can occur during winter months where the season is more Yin than Yang.
Many mothers turn to TCM practitioners due to this extremely gentle and non-invasive method and is used in conjunction or as an alternative with modern obstetrics. These modalities are safe, natural therapies that can help encourage a breech baby to turn into optimal fetal positioning before delivery.
According to Chinese medicine, it is recommended to do a full 10-day course of moxa, even if baby has already turned, to ensure they remain head-down until labor. Applications can be shorter in duration by the end.
It is important to note that the longer a baby remains in a breech position, the more difficult it may be for the baby to turn, as they continue to grow in the womb leaving less space for turning. If you’ve received a Breech Baby diagnosis, it is best to begin treatment as soon as possible.

III. The LABOR INDUCTION Acupuncture Treatment
For thousands of years, Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners have been using acupuncture to induce labor naturally.
Pregnancy is a very exciting time filled with many transformations and anticipation. As you approach the final stages of pregnancy, you may consider acupuncture to help ease emotional anxiety, fear, or stress and to help initiate the process of labor naturally.
As women reach 40 weeks of pregnancy, often times methods of induction become heavily encouraged in Western healthcare. Interventions are discussed and giving consent can be a slippery slide from one intervention to another. To precipitate the necessity for more such as the use of induction medications or having a Cesarean delivery (or more, not without dangers of their own), natural induction may be a very valid first resort.
If you find yourself approaching 40 weeks, or are over 40 weeks, acupuncture can help prepare the body for birth by inserting the needles at specific points in the body to promote the production of hormones needed to signal to the body to induce labor safely and effectively. Treatments are tailored to the individual and are designed to work in harmony with the body, offering a calm, supportive approach to initiating labor naturally. Stimulate your body’s innate wisdom to do what it was meant to with the help of acupuncture and TCM.
